Do you want to know a bit of a secret? Right before I start scanning in new rolls of film, I am convinced that they will all be terrible. It's true. Especially any photos from my Hasselblad, because I don't have a light meter, so each picture is a bit of a risk when I press the shutter. Obviously I should get a light meter. Anyone have $150 laying around? Hmmm, me neither.
As I was scanning the photos into the computer I got excited as i saw more and more of them appear on screen, turning out the way I had hoped. There are always front-runners such as this shot of the scarf Martha sent me. I just love the lighting and colors in this shot. This got me thinking about other mediums of art and those who create. Do you face this instant feeling of doubt while you are working? Often I will doubt myself when drawing or painting, but those aren't my strenghts, so I am comfortable to simmer in the mediocrity a bit. Photography is the thing I know, composition, technique, lighting...but still I face that big monster of doubt each time I pull a roll out of the camera.
So tell me, do you always feel confident in your art? Often doubtful? Do you think this self-questioning is necessary for the work to progress? That might be the key for me.
