Never did I imagine I would have a vegetable garden. Never. In my life I have only accomplished killing plants, not nurturing them. For whatever reason if it grew from the ground I was destined to kill it somehow. But the girls really wanted a garden, and I felt it was such a good lesson for them to really see how much work it takes to get that food that shows up on their table.
We did lots of stuff wrong. The tomato plants are just sprawling around on the ground, lacking any kind of support. But you know what? We have a bazillion tomatoes. You wouldn't know that though because two little girls pluck them from the plant and eat them like plums. I think yesterday alone they consumed every one of the tomatoes in the picture above.
They even stuck a pumpkin seed in the ground in a random place of the yard and it has actually sprouted and bloomed! My herbs are thriving and I actually have more than I can use. Luckilly herbs like thyme and sage can be frozen for winter. Although they wouldn't not be so good in a fresh dish, they taste great when thrown into a sauce or roasted chicken.
Here is my point. Just because you are convinced you do something poorly, don't give up on the idea of it. Throw caution to the wind and give it a shot. We didn't research a bunch of info on gardening. We didn't make any fancy garden beds, but instead just turned the soil in an old flower bed in the backyard. We planted too much cabbage. We waited too long to plant certain vegetables. But you know what? It doesn't matter, because we were successful. And that means that next spring we will have the confidence to be more adventurous. Maybe we will make the garden bigger. Who knows. What I do know is that I will mark gardening off the list of things I can't do. Good thing I gave it a shot.
